A Main Street steakhouse in a North Dakota prairie town with the badlands on the horizon

Home  /  Park Visitors

You've just spent a day in the Badlands. Now eat properly.

Belfield is the first real town east of Theodore Roosevelt National Park's south unit — about fifteen minutes from the Painted Canyon overlook, straight off I-94. If you're looking for something better than a gas station burrito, this is it.

Where we are

Closer than you'd think.

Belfield sits at the junction of I-94 and Highway 85, which puts it within easy reach of everything people come out here for.

  1. 15

    Painted Canyon Overlook

The stop everybody makes on I-94. Fifteen minutes east and you're at our door — and if you've timed it for late afternoon on a Friday, the prime rib is just going on the board.

    →
  2. 20

Medora & the south unit entrance

Twenty minutes west. Plenty of people eat in Medora because they don't know there's another option — this is the other option.

    →
  3. 20

    Dickinson

Twenty minutes east, and where most of the chains are. Worth the drive out here instead, which is a sentence a lot of Dickinson people would agree with.

    →
  4. 60

    North unit of the park

About an hour north on Highway 85 — and we're on that road too, so we're the meal on either end of that trip.

Planning the day

Hike in the morning. Eat at four.

The park is best early and the light is best late, which leaves a very natural gap in the middle of the afternoon. Our kitchen opens at eleven and the prime rib goes on the board at four on Fridays and Saturdays — so the sensible plan is a morning in the park, the Painted Canyon on the way back, and a table here before the evening rush.

Come as you are

Boots, dust, hiking clothes, kids. Nobody here is dressed for dinner either.

Walk-ins only

No reservations. If there's more than eight of you, ring ahead and we'll make room.

Closed Sundays & Mondays

Worth knowing before you plan the drive. Winter hours are shorter — call if in doubt.
